Introduction
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, higher education institutions in India are increasingly focusing on integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Internships and On-the-Job Training (OJT) programmes play a vital role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world professional requirements.
Through OJT, students gain exposure to professional work environments, enabling them to develop essential employability skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and professional conduct. This experiential learning approach enhances students’ confidence, independence, and self-awareness, while also providing valuable insights into diverse industries and career pathways.
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a structured, practice-oriented learning approach that enables students to acquire relevant competencies and skills in a real or simulated workplace environment under guided supervision.
OJT Objectives:
An OJT programme, in general, sets out to achieve objectives such as
- Align classroom learnings with workplace outcomes.
- Provide students with real-world work experience and align their expectations with job demands.
- Combine physical and digital learning modes in industry settings, blended with mentorship.
- Foster research skills, including knowledge discovery, analytical tools, methodologies, and ethical conduct.
- Introduce students to emerging technologies and their applications in various fields.
- Strengthen students' entrepreneurial skills and encourage job creation.
- Facilitate problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, and collaboration.
- Foster social awareness and philanthropic values among students.
- Instil professional principles, ethics, values, and integrity to meet employment market demands and social needs.
Course Credits and Evaluation
- The On-the-Job Training (OJT) component carries a weightage of Four (4) Credits.
- As per NEP 2020 guidelines, postgraduate students are required to complete OJT either during the Second Semester of the programme or during the semester break following the Second Semester.
- Evaluation of the OJT programme comprises two components:
- External Evaluation (50%) – Assessment by the Host Organisation
- Internal Evaluation (50%) – Assessment by the Institute
